Context

Lightyshare is France’s premier peer-to-peer marketplace for professional audiovisual equipment, with over 23,000 users and 16,000 listings. Renters usually need a whole list of gear for a shoot, but the platform only lets them search one item at a time — sending them from owner to owner. For our final Ironhack project, our team of three had two weeks to rethink this search.

Research

We ran 9 in-depth interviews (some over an hour and a half) and a survey with 165 answers, which shaped our primary persona: David, a freelance videographer in Paris. A key insight: 44.4% of renters prefer sourcing from a single owner, even if it means accepting alternative items. Further research details are confidential.

Problem statement

“How could we help freelance videographers using Lightyshare locate a list of equipment in the fewest possible locations — ideally, in a single one?”

Solution

Through several iterations and 11 concept and usability tests, we rebuilt the search experience:

  • A multi-item search bar — each item becomes a “pellet”; the bar turns into a list that can be shown or hidden, and pasting a list separated by “;” creates all pellets at once.

  • Results grouped by owner — stacked cards highlight owners holding some, most or all of the requested items, sorted by distance or by best match.

  • Details without leaving the results — an overlay shows each offer, plus suggestions from the same owner’s catalog.

  • Open to alternatives — users choose, item by item, where they accept substitutes.

Visual design

I built most of the UI components for the final prototype with an atomic approach, staying within Lightyshare’s brand identity — which users found clear and enjoyable. Screens were designed at 1440px to match the client’s handoff files.

Next steps

Usability and desirability testing, handling large lists (pellets grouped by category), real-time filtering, and a mobile app — 66.7% of users open Lightyshare on their phone to talk with owners.
